To put it another way, we are in a leadership crisis. 

I am sure you are witness to this crisis via political parties (on all sides), at powerful corporations, at your workplace and through the educational and religious institutions you interact with. 

It can no longer stand. We need to expect better. But our popular theories and mental models of leadership don't currently create true leaders. Instead, they create people who can amass power and fortune, play political games and often act from a place of fear and scarcity.

The ask? Leaders who work to enhance all our lives and the world we live in.

To lift each other up, first we need to redefine what leadership is in today's ecosystem. Both for those who are emerging and those that we are cultivating in the generations to come.

We want to help you become an embodiment of the leader our world needs right now. 

It won't be easy as it involves system changes, mindset shifts and global efforts. But it starts with all of us as individuals embracing our responsibility. It's going to take all of us to contribute, all of us to collaborate, all of us to do and expect better.

The organisations of today sprouted from the needs of industrial times. These ideas were visionary, and liberating, and a place full of potential for that era. Unfortunately, we have come to believe that these ways of celebrating scale, speed, perfection, growth, productivity and profit is the only way. 

And while these ideas worked for that time and context, the evidence all around us shows that this mechanistic and infinite growth model in a complex and finite world is no longer working. In 2020, our world is no longer stable and certain. We live in complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity — and many of our current crises have been caused by business practices of the past. 

Team & Work believes organisations are uniquely placed to have a monumental impact toward building the new systems and paradigms shifts that our world needs to survive. Businesses are already platforms that connect, coordinate, and organise the efforts of many around a mission that achieves change. If organisations allow their teams to transform into diverse living communities that embrace ambiguity and do the work that matters, teams will not only find fulfilment in the work they do, but also be inspired to build solutions that impact the greater good.

As we imagine the future of work, emerging business leaders are the ones that will create and reshape these organisations. And to do so, they will need to embrace fresh leadership principles, ideals and capabilities. Leaders need to develop trust, provide context, and ignite curiosity to hold space for new ideas that have a healing impact that then helps all of us repair, rebound and create our new world.

Team & Work believes that this is a pivotal time for a new definition of leadership. And that this idea needs to be discussed and distributed, especially with the continued rise of information technology and biotechnology. We know the businesses that create these new technologies will need true leaders who understand the consequences of the consequences and hold humans and the natural world we are part of at the center of their solutions. Otherwise we will run the risk of technology being used to amplify and empower the old systems and processes that are inhuman, mechanistic and destructive.

Ultimately, we are here to show you as an emerging leader, a manager, a team leader that there is a better way. No one should suffer under poor leadership anymore but equally, we all need to expect and do better to see change.

Who is behind Team & Work

For the past 3 years Lisa Miller has driven the growth and development of leaders and team members at Canva — one of Australia's fastest growing and most successful tech startups. This has given her deep and unique insights into what it takes to build highly productive teams in a rapidly changing environment.

That role was the latest facet in a diverse range of positions focused on building software products and teams since 2002, helping everyone from large multinationals to small local charities build their online platforms. She spearheaded search strategy at Australia's largest media company before leaving to follow her insatiable passion: building her own online business. After building one of Australia's most respected specialist content sites and growing a huge online community, Lisa sold her business to focus on helping other entrepreneurs establish their brands and build better businesses.

She's now using her extensive experience and passion for understanding human potential to establish Team & Work — an organisation devoted to helping leaders and teams develop in a values-driven way that creates healthy, productive, and — above all — purpose driven people.
