359 sleeps until Web Directions 07
3 October 2006
I just got home from Web Directions 06 and I'm already counting down the days until the next one.
I think you can measure the success of a conference by how energised you feel afterwards. By how many ideas it's spawned; by how many new relationships it has produced. By this reckoning, Web Directions 06 is one of the most successful conferences I've been to.
I was overwhelmed by the number of people that I wanted to speak to and the number of people who wanted to speak to me. To anyone who wanted to have a chat that didn't transpire, I apologise, and can only point at the crowd and say "it was too much!". But too much of a good thing is never enough.
I think that my presentation was one of the best I've done (which doesn't necessarily imply that it was good). Perhaps I can put that down to the excellent collaboration with Kevin Yank, or the helping hand from Jeremy Keith :P
If you'd like to master the Bluepoint dance moves, you can download the opening animation here (.SWF, 99KB). You can also download the full presentation (.PPT, 14.2MB). It's kinda big because of my penchant for pasting Photoshop files in there, but if you get a free picture of Jeremy Keith as a strippergram, it's gotta be worth it. The actual original file was written by Kevin in Powerpoint 2007, but I figure no one has that, so it's been degraded to Powerpoint 2003 here.
Once again I'd like to thank everyone who turned up to the conference – you're what makes it all worthwhile. And a special thank you to John and Maxine for making it all run smoothly and giving Web Directions 06 that friendly, personal touch.
Ten things you mightn't have known before Web Directions 06

Another thing that was obvious -- javascripters have more fun....even if it is at the expense of other javascripters.

Cam! Thx for such a sweet post!
I'm so glad you guys had a good time, truly, and I can assure you it would not have been the same without you by a very long stretch.
One thing though: *forget* MC Hammer. Thx to you I had to go out and buy The Immaculate Collection on Saturday, and indeed, myself, and my neighbours have not stopped listening to Get into the Groove since......and yes, the next movie I plan on hiring is going to be Desperately Seeking Susan.......so, thanks for memories!

You could fill a very unique niche Lise.
"We urgently need someone to do some JavaScript ... and they have to be blonde!!!"

If you need a tutor babe, I'm there ;)
I had such a wonderful time at WD06 - to meet all you lovely people and hang out with you in beautiful surroundings, I've had the loveliest week I can remember in ages.
SXSW was good - I had a great time - but it wasn't so personal; this had that extra touch of friendliness that made it really special; I was tingling all week :D

Yeah I missed the after-party - had to fly back to Canberra straight after ... that's the second year in a row I've missed it! I'm definently staying for the party for WD07.

Love the slides "What your website looks like to a programmer" and "What your web 2.0 web site looks like to a programmer" :)
Why not export your PPT as a PDF, to bypass the Office2003/2007 incompatibilities? Here I was able to generate a 1.26 MB PDF.
An oh ... to all Office2003 users: upgrade now to 2007B2TR, it totally rocks!
Wbr,
B!
